Andøya and Lofoten
Our first longer stop was in Narvik, where we visited the monument to Polish soldiers who fought heroically during the Battle of Narvik in 1940. The Polish Independent Highland Brigade played a key role in the Allied campaign against German forces in this strategic Arctic port. The monument stands as a tribute to their bravery in harsh mountainous terrain and freezing conditions.
Nearby, we paused at the Arctic winter railway station, a scenic spot where we once again indulged in delicious waffles, basking in the warmth of the sun that never truly sets in summer.
Next, we circled the island of Andøya, staying overnight at its farthest tip. This time, the campsite was filled entirely with international tourists, and while it lacked the cozy local atmosphere we’d come to love, the breathtaking views of the sea and the almost-setting sun more than made up for it.
Heading into Lofoten, I had mixed expectations—wondering if it could really be as stunning as everyone claims. Turns out, I had no reason to doubt. The landscapes were absolutely breathtaking, with dramatic peaks and turquoise waters that made us want to stop and explore every few minutes. If only there were fewer campervans and crowds!
We visited the Lofotr Viking Museum, where we met a Polish couple working there. Their stories added a personal and heartfelt layer to the experience—thank you! We sailed across a lake in a wind-powered replica Viking ship, tried our hand at archery, learned about iron smelting, and immersed ourselves in fascinating historical demonstrations.
We also spent time at a live blacksmith museum, where we listened to the blacksmith’s tales as he worked. He shared memories from his childhood, stories of surviving on the gifts of the sea, the origins of Norwegian surnames, and many other captivating insights. It was hard to leave.
Finally, we reached the very end of Lofoten—the village of Å. But the sheer number of campervans and tourists overwhelmed us, so we retreated to quieter corners of the archipelago, seeking the peace that had made this journey so special.
