Wrocław
This trip was a little different. The main goal wasn’t sightseeing, but testing a potential successor to our beloved campervan and electric car – though that story deserves its own post.
Since we left late, we decided to spend the night near Częstochowa at a charming spot called Jurajskie Manowce. Nestled in the Polish Jura, this place surprised us with its sanctuary for exotic animals rescued from various hardships. Turtles, frogs, fish, and lizards greeted us from their enclosures, each with a story of survival and care.
The next day, we aimed to begin our sightseeing at the Złoty Stok Gold Mine, a historic site where gold was extracted for centuries. Unfortunately, all tickets were sold out – a clear sign we need to return, this time with a reservation. The mine, dating back to the Middle Ages, once produced over 16 tons of gold and now offers underground tours and interactive exhibits.
Instead, we detoured to Muchołapka to visit the eerie Mölke Museum in Ludwikowice Kłodzkie. Located in a former Nazi facility, the museum explores the mysterious Riese complex and the legend of Die Glocke. Our guide led us through dimly lit tunnels, delivering a line we’ll never forget: “I was scared too – when I was alive.” A small museum, yes, but packed with atmosphere and worth a stop even for a short visit.
The following day was dedicated to exploring Wrocław, a city known for its bridges, baroque architecture, and whimsical dwarfs. Our challenge: find as many of the city’s famous krasnale (gnomes) as possible. We counted over 50, each with its own personality and story—from firefighters to bankers to yoga instructors. The hunt turned into a joyful scavenger game, all while admiring the city’s historic facades and vibrant street life.
Before heading home, we made one last stop at Kolejkowo, Poland’s largest model railway exhibition. We expected a quick visit—but ended up staying for hours. The level of detail was astonishing: miniature cities, humorous scenes, and countless Easter eggs hidden in plain sight. It was a playful and unexpected finale to a trip that blended curiosity, history, and a touch of mischief.
